Synopsis: Erik, the physically deformed hero finds a home, a place to belong and be accepted, in the heroine, Claire. She has a fondness for animals, for seeming lost causes. In Erik, she finds the love she thought she'd lost. Together, they escape the personal hells in which they'd been mired.

My two cents: This is a very well-written book. It is also fast-paced. I felt a little swept away and once I started reading, it was hard to stop. (Life, however, would insist otherwise.)

Claire is different than your average romance heroine. She is over thirty, never married, and under the control of a man who does not have her best interests at heart. She rebels against the "proper" behavior expected of her.

Erik is a man who has few friends and lives most of his life in solitude. His fascination with Claire helps heal the wounds caused by the fickle Christine. He is not the nicest man, however, and at times downright nasty.

These two characters could not be any more right for each other and while their coming together felt a little rushed to me, it still seemed right.

I liked Ms Cathcart's take on the classic Phantom story. It was a little more graphic (read: erotic) than I personally care for, but there was story and emotion enough that I enjoyed it even while skipping those scenes. The historical detail is excellent without being "textbook-y" and allows the reader to feel a part of the time period. Do not expect this to be your typical run-of-the-mill romance, however. The end is not expected but somehow, it's still acceptable.

Overall: 4.3 stars. Quick and deep with believable characters who have believable issues.

This book is pure fluff.
"Eye of the Beholder" is a wonderful, and excitingly original work by Sharon E. Cathcart. The pages are alive with vibrant characters, and locations. Her love and respect of the source material, locations, horses, and period detail and moires shines though on every page. Sexy, with much more depth than your run-of-the-mill dime-a-dozen typical everyday romance novels. Great to see a strong independent heroine for a change. A thoroughly enjoyable read from cover to cover. I look forward to bigger and better things from this exciting new young writer. A perfect beach book, or summer read by the pool. A fun ride & read!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Phantom when I was younger, and although the story stuck with me, I had forgotten how much resonated for me about the tale. Sharon Cathcart resurrected this for me in her book, only her tale seems propelled by a little less romance and a little more passion get me?
It's fast-paced, with a widely-sympathetic protagonist (a woman, who is not perfect and quiet), and I simply adored the writing style. I was genuinely impressed by this book!
Vivid images and the French dialect in this wonderful story made me feel as though I were taken back in time to 19th Century France.

A bittersweet story of a woman who loses the love of her life, only to learn that her life has just begun. She finds the gentleness of a man, who becomes her world in this sensual and provocative tale of love.

I particularly enjoyed how the author told the story from two different perspectives, through Erik's journal and through the main character, Claire Delacroix.

My first impression If 90% of everything is crap, then this definitely falls within the remaining 10%. And in the end, I retained that impression, even though along the way, I had a number of complaints. Yet for all those complaints, I still ended up rating it 5 stars. Yes, I teetered on the edge between 4 and 5, but I finally came down on the higher side, because if the next book I read has all the characteristics of this one, that would make me very happy, because of all the things this story did right. The characters captivated me. I ended up thinking of Claire as an actual person, inconsistencies and all. The story dealt with a real issue, and one close to my heart, the human need to love and be loved. A theme that (whether Sharon intended it or not) strikes more deeply than the title implies Not just that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That everyone needs some sympathy with others, in order to survive.
