2015 Reviewing Challenge: Book by an author under 30This Challenge was harder than I thought—most Christian fiction seems to be written by older authors (it’s a big clue that they are over 30 when their bio says they are a grandmother). No one actually comes out and says their age. Anyway, I was pleased to find Australian author Will Kostakis come up on my blog feed, because as well as making some interesting points about male authors, he also was under 30. Off to Amazon, where I picked up his debut novel, Loathing Lola, published when he was just 19.
Fifteen-year-old Australian schoolgirl Courtney Marlow has auditioned for Real Teens, a new reality TV show looking to highlight the life of a real teenager. Applying wasn’t her idea, but she’s been chosen and a chance discovery means she has to go through with it. But no sooner is the show announced than everyone wants to get in on it, from her second-best friend to her father’s new wife and the President of the school Mothers’ Auxiliary (their equivalent of the PTA).
Loathing Lola is written entirely in the first person, from Courtney’s point of view, and she has a clear and convincing voice—it’s easy to believe she is an average Australian teenager (the accuracy of the voice is a little disturbing when I remembered this was written by an Australian teenage male). She’s smart, funny, sad, depressing, angry—in other words, real. Well, she feels real. Unlike the TV show, which we find out is nothing real at all.
I enjoyed Loathing Lola. There was a strong author voice, a cast of quirky and interesting characters (I can’t say they were all likeable, but that was the point), a well-constructed plot and a theme that will appeal to a generation fixated on reality TV. And a great end.

This book is boring garbage.
Best left on the shelf.
There are some books that should never have been written and Loathing Lola most definitely falls under that category. I don't know what made me more angry; the amount time I wasted reading this horrifically written novel or the fact that I wasted $15 on it that will now go to someone who should never have passed his high school english exams. Mr Kostakis took what could have been a very powerful and inspiring idea and transformed it into one of the worst pieces of literature ever created. The only admirable quality of this so called 'writer' is that he has somehow managed to transform every idea and theme worth exploring and thinking about into nothing but a superficial, tedious piece of literature that should only ever be crossed in an unpacked storage box in the back section of a library no one visits.
Courtney Marlow is facing a tough year, being seen as 'the girl with the dead boyfriend' by the whole school she has trouble keeping herself together. She faces school, as well as auditioning for a reality TV show like her boyfriend would have wanted her too... this makes her life a hell of a lot more complicated and Courtney doesn't know who to trust.
This new reality TV show reveals the gaps in Courtneys life and pulls her world apart in ways that she never imagined would happen. Leaving her alone and powerless to a large, influencial company Courtney has no choice but to fight her way out. By any means possible.
Loathing Lola was a funny, intriguing and truely captivating novel which had me from the opening chapter.
The realistic style that the characters were written in is a feature common to Will Kotakis' writing style. His characters are detailed to a good degree but not described to the point where nothing is left to the readers imagination.
Even the character developments are cleverly portrayed and executed, with the relationships and friendships developing at a realistic rate.
The friendships weren't just portrayed as happy with no issues, they actually reflected the complications and rollercoaster pathway that most friendships have, especially in times of great hardship.
The relationships between characters displayed the highs and lows of friendship and that some friendships can remain strong no matter what happens and that a little trust can go a long way.
With twists and turns at every corner Loathing Lola kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat for most of the duration of the novel,- as soon as I thought that I had the ending figured out, something new would happen and turn my perceptions on their head once more.
Surprisingly I enjoyed this book even more than the other Will Kostakis novel I have read, The First Third, it was everything I expected it to be and more.
I simply cannot wait to read more by Will!
